Vintage Large Heavy Shishi Seal
Chinese guardian lions or Imperial guardian lions, often miscalled "Foo Dogs" in the West, are a common representation of the lion in imperial China. Chinese guardian lions are sometimes referred to in English as shishi, from the Chinese shí shī (Chinese:石獅; pinyin: shíshī; literally: "stone lion", which refers specifically to lion sculptures in stone.
The lions are traditionally carved from decorative stone, such as marble and granite or cast in bronze or iron. Because of the high cost of these materials and the labor required to produce them, private use of guardian lions was traditionally reserved for wealthy or elite families. Indeed, a traditional symbol of a family's wealth or social status was the placement of guardian lions in front of the family home.
The Chinese chop or seal is used to sign documents, artwork, and other paperwork. The Chinese chop is most commonly made from stone, but can also be made in plastic, ivory, or metal.
There are three Mandarin Chinese names for the Chinese chop or seal. The seal is most commonly called印鑑 (yìn jiàn) or 印章 (yìnzhāng). It is also sometimes called圖章 / 图章 (túzhāng).
The Chinese chop is used with a red paste called 朱砂 (zhūshā). The chop is pressed lightly into the朱砂 (zhūshā) then the image is transferred to paper by applying pressure to the chop. There may be a soft surface beneath the paper to ensure a clean transfer of the image. The paste is kept in a covered jar when not in use to prevent it from drying out.
There are two types of seal paste depending on what base material they are made of. The standard colour is vermilion red (or lighter or darker shades of red) but other colours can be used such as black, navy, etc. for specific purposes.
The Chinese emperors, their families and officials used large seals known as xǐ (玺; 璽), later renamed bǎo (宝; 寶; "treasure"), which corresponds to the Great Seals of Western countries. These were usually made of jade (although hard wood or precious metal could also be used), and were originally square in shape. They were changed to a rectangular form during the Song dynasty, but reverted to square during the Qing dynasty.
Silk: The red paste is made from finely pulverized cinnabar, mixed with castor oil and silk strands. The silk strands bind the mixture together to form a very thick substance. It has a very oily appearance and tends to be a bright red in colour.
Plant: The red paste is made from finely pulverized cinnabar, mixed with castor oiland moxa punk. Because the base is a plant one that has been pulverised, the texture is very loose due to the fact that it does not bind. The appearance is sponge like and not oily.
Determining which side of the seal should face up may be done in a number of ways: if there is a carving on top, the front should face the user; if there is an inscription on the side, it should face to the left of the user; if there is a dot on the side, it should face away from the user.

This very large shishi seal is displayed with a large lion standing on its hind legs holding a ribbon with its paws and mouth. There is a four petal flower with what seems to be a round seal with three circles encompassing three squares. Have been unable to decipher the meaning so far.
The large square base of this seal is approx. 4.25” x approx. 4.25” x approx. 1-1/8.” The overall height of the seal is approx. 7.” The distance from the square base of the seal to the top of the shishi is approx. 5.75.”
The color of the seal is bluish-green with brown mottling throughout. There is an almost invisible crack at the tail of one of the cubs. Possible repair done there but not noticeable.
Keep in mind that there are some color differences in the pictures due to the light/graphic qualities of the camera/flash and individual computer graphics capabilities. In great condition.
I have just found a small repair done on this item which was not evident when listed on eBay. The price of this item has been greatly reduced as a result. The new price reflects the small, hardly noticeable restoration done to the piece. I do apologize, but it really is hard to see.
Extremely Unusual Seal --- Distinctive --- Very Large --- Very Rare. Heavy. Unique.
“Very good condition. Very large Shishi Lion w/cubs seal. No red zhusha residue.”: “Very good condition. Very large Shishi Lion w/cubs seal. No red zhusha residue.”
