For you to consider is a fabulous mid-20th century Japanese porcelain melon
jar. Exquisitely hand decorated in polychrome enamels with heavy gilt details
and scrollwork, this jar is a substantial statement piece in both scale and
design. Two identical panels depicting three geisha preparing for their day are
divided by a dramatic black ground. Standing approximately 13” in height rising
from a base measuring 5” in diameter, the jar is 8.5” at its widest point and
has a 3” opening. The hallmark is seen on the bottom. In overall beautiful
condition with wear appropriate for age and history of gentle use, there are no
chips, cracks, crazing, prior repairs, or other compromising imperfections
found. Occasional light rubbing and faint gilt loss is seen on close
inspection, but thus is neither noticeable or distracting unless you know where
this has occurred and are intentionally looking for it. Please review the
photos as they are a descriptive part of the listing. A stunning, heavily
decorated and well crafted melon jar you will admire and showcase in a
prominent location.
