Maker: On the reverse of this exquisite gold encrusted antique plate is the
word "Satsuma" written in red in Japanese hiragana lettering. The design and
the quality of the porcelain suggest that it was made in Japan in the early
part of the 20th century but that is not confirmed.
Production of this type of Satsuma china began in the early 19th century,
originating in the province of Satsuma, Japan, and later spreading to other
